Fuck my life! It was hard enough to get Ri to open up when we first met but Demon is as rigid as a fucking wall. I know someone hurt him; it’s easily seen in his eyes when a woman tries to flirt with him. He plays it off as being super cool and unaffected, but it makes him nervous, and I want to know why. I have a vague idea, Ri mentioned it when we were talking one night in the early hours without anyone around. She loves him, shit, it’s like they’re siblings. Yeah, I know they're not related but she told me what he did for her when she was taken. He never gave up hope, and she told me about the other stuff that when down before the whole shit show.

Demon sits frozen in his spot, throwing back drink after drink. His words become slurred the deeper into the drinks he goes. I watch him intently as I get ready to try and haul his ass up and get him to his car. I’m about to tell him enough is enough when he sways sideways. I shoot to my feet, practically diving across the table to grab him before he hits the floor.

“You’re really pretty,” he slurs, then burps. I can’t help it; I smile at him. He giggles like someone has just told a hilarious joke.

“I think it's time to get you home,” I say, taking a deep breath. Pulling with everything I have I manage to haul his ass up, I’m sweating like mad, but I do manage to get him on his feet. I hook a foot around the chair and tug it closer and as gently as I can, I help him sit back in it. My phone rings in my pocket, I keep a hand on Demon’s shoulder to steady him as I pull it out, my brows scrunching together seeing it’s a Facetime from Ri.

“Aiden!” I shout to catch his attention as he’s not behind the bar. He comes out of a side door from the far end, his eyes narrowing before they widen. “Keep an eye on him for a second and make sure his ass doesn’t fall.”

“Okay,” he mutters, striding towards me and taking over. Once he’s got a hand on Demon and keeping him steady, I rush outside to answer the call. Just as I step out onto the sidewalk in the cool night air, I swipe the call button.

“Fucking hell, it took you long enough to answer,” Ri gripes as soon as her picture comes on the screen.

“Yeah, sorry,” I say with a quirked brow. “What’s up? You can’t be missing us all already?” She laughs, like I knew she would, but then her face turns serious. That has my shoulders tensing and my mouth curls down into a frown. “Ri?”

“How did it go with Ashton?” she asks, and I know her well enough that I know she’s putting something off. “Everything okay?”

“Why are you deflecting?” I retort.
